A steadfast unionist strategist, he spent decades navigating Northern Ireland's turbulent politics before a dramatic fall from grace.
For over a quarter-century, Jeffrey Donaldson was a fixture of Northern Irish unionism, a careful and often cautious political operator who rose to the very top. Elected as the MP for Lagan Valley in 1997, he built a reputation as a detail-oriented negotiator, deeply skeptical of compromises that he felt undermined the region's place within the United Kingdom. His career was a long arc from the Ulster Unionist Party, where he was a protégé of David Trimble, to the more hardline Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which he eventually led. As DUP leader from 2021, his central role was managing his party's fraught relationship with post-Brexit trading arrangements, the Northern Ireland Protocol. His eventual decision to strike a deal with the UK government and restore power-sharing in 2024 was a monumental moment, ending a two-year political stalemate. However, his tenure ended not with that achievement, but in shocking personal scandal, marking a precipitous and tragic close to a defining political life.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Jeffrey was born in 1962, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
