Biography

Jaz Coleman appeared on the post-punk scene not as a mere singer but as a shamanic prophet of doom. As the vocalist and conceptual engine of Killing Joke, his guttural delivery and lyrics brimming with social chaos, occult symbolism, and esoteric philosophy defined the band's terrifying, danceable sound. In the early 80s, fueled by a literal fear of an impending apocalypse, he famously fled to Iceland, a pattern of dramatic exits that underscored his uncompromising nature. Coleman’s story, however, has a second, contrasting movement. A classically trained composer, he has spent decades writing symphonies, concertos, and film scores, collaborating with major orchestras from Prague to New Zealand. This duality—between the primal scream of the punk prophet and the meticulous craft of the orchestral composer—is the core of his fascinating journey, proving his artistry was never just noise, but a complex system of controlled eruption.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

Jaz was born in 1960, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
