A Finnish winger of pure, unadulterated speed who became a hometown hero, spending the heart of his career with the Helsinki club Jokerit.
Jani Rita scored 30 goals in 56 games for Jokerit during the 2006-07 SM-liiga season, a career high that showcased the speed that made him a first-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 1999. Born in Helsinki in 1981, Rita played 106 NHL games across four seasons but never matched the scoring pace he showed in Finland. Returning to Jokerit in 2005, he became a fixture on the wing at Hartwall Arena, using his acceleration to create scoring chances and pressure opposing defenses. When Jokerit moved from the Finnish Liiga to the Kontinental Hockey League in 2014, Rita remained with the club as a veteran leader. He played 14 total seasons for Jokerit across two stints, retiring in 2017. His career demonstrates that a player's specific talents can achieve their fullest expression in the right environment.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Jani was born in 1981, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
