A dominant post player whose physical brilliance powered the Minnesota Lynx to a WNBA title and made her a college basketball phenomenon.
Janel McCarville brought a throwback, powerhouse game to the modern women's basketball court. Hailing from a small town in Wisconsin, she became a national sensation at the University of Minnesota, leading the Golden Gophers on a magical run to the 2004 Final Four. Her combination of size, soft hands, and surprising passing vision made her nearly unguardable in the paint. As the first overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft, expectations were sky-high. Her professional journey had its twists, from early years in Charlotte to finding her true home with the Minnesota Lynx. It was there, reunited with college teammate Lindsay Whalen, that McCarville's genius flourished. Her pivotal role in the 2013 WNBA championship, including a famous inbound pass from her knees to Whalen for a series-clinching shot, cemented her legacy. McCarville played the game with a joyful, physical artistry that delighted fans and frustrated opponents in equal measure.
