The guitarist whose ringing, melodic arpeggios and rockabilly flair defined the early sound of the Pretenders, blending punk energy with timeless pop songcraft.
James Honeyman-Scott was the sonic architect behind the Pretenders' thrilling debut. More than just a guitarist, he was a vital musical counterpoint to Chrissie Hynde's fierce vocals and songwriting, layering in chiming Rickenbacker melodies, unexpected country licks, and a rock and roll swagger that felt both classic and utterly new. His playing on hits like 'Brass in Pocket' and 'Back on the Chain Gang' provided the band's emotional texture and hook-laden brilliance. Offstage, he was known as a warm, funny, and deeply musical soul, whose enthusiasm was as infectious as his riffs. His death at 25, just as the band was poised for further success, cut short a career that had already reshaped the landscape of rock guitar, leaving a legacy of warmth and invention in every note he played.
