He solved the problem of software incompatibility across devices by inventing a language that could run anywhere.
James Gosling's quest began with a pragmatic frustration: why couldn't code written for one machine easily work on another? While working at Sun Microsystems in the early 1990s, he led a small team, initially called the 'Green Team,' to tackle this very issue. The result was Oak, later renamed Java, a language designed with a simple, powerful mantra: 'write once, run anywhere.' Its secret was the Java Virtual Machine, an abstract layer that let programs operate independently of the underlying hardware. Java's arrival coincided with the dawn of the web browser, and its promise of portability made it the perfect engine for early interactive web content, ultimately ensuring its adoption in everything from enterprise servers to Android smartphones.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
James was born in 1955, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
