A charismatic West Indies cricket captain who traded the applause of the sporting world for a life of missionary service in southern Africa.
Jackie Grant’s life unfolded in two distinct, deeply committed acts. In the first, he was the bold and innovative captain of the West Indies cricket team in the early 1930s. Born into a prominent cricketing family in Trinidad, he led with an adventurous spirit, famously declaring an innings closed to force a result in a Test match against England—a radical move at the time. His leadership was personable and effective, securing the West Indies' first-ever Test series victory in 1935. Then, at the peak of his sporting fame, he walked away. The second act began after a 1937 religious conversion. Grant, with his wife, dedicated themselves to missionary work, first in South Africa and then for decades in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He served as a teacher, pastor, and school principal, immersing himself in community life far from the cricket grounds. This remarkable pivot from international sports captain to humble missionary made him a unique figure, remembered not just for tactical flair on the pitch, but for a profound personal conviction that redirected his entire life's path.

Jackie was born in 1907, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
