Biography

Ismail al-Faruqi's life was shaped by displacement and a profound search for intellectual coherence. Forced from his Jerusalem home in 1948, he carried with him a deep commitment to Islam and a scholar's rigor, earning doctorates in both Western and Islamic philosophy. Settling in America, he observed a Muslim world he felt was struggling to engage with modernity. His response was ambitious: the 'Islamization of Knowledge.' Al-Faruqi argued that Muslims should not reject modern disciplines like sociology or economics, but should critically filter them through the lens of tawhid, Islam's core principle of God's oneness, to create an authentically Islamic framework for contemporary life. He was a formidable institution-builder, helping found academic organizations and think tanks to advance this project. While his ideas sparked debate, his central thrust—that faith must actively shape, not retreat from, the modern world—established him as a pivotal figure in 20th-century Islamic thought, seeking a path for tradition to thrive in a new age.
