Biography

Irom Sharmila Chanu's life was irrevocably changed in 2000 by an incident known as the Malom massacre, where ten civilians were killed at a bus stop in Manipur. In response, the young poet and activist began a hunger strike, vowing not to eat, drink, comb her hair, or look in a mirror until India repealed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which she held responsible for the violence. What began as a personal fast became an epic, grueling struggle. Declared a prisoner, she was force-fed through a nasal tube for years, becoming a global symbol of peaceful resistance. Her strike stretched for over 500 weeks, making it the longest hunger strike in recorded history. In 2016, in a strategic shift, she ended her fast to enter electoral politics, though her bid for office was unsuccessful. Her campaign fundamentally altered the conversation about conflict and human rights in India's northeastern states.

Generation X

1965–1980

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.

Irom was born in 1972, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
