A Swedish-Finnish author who conjures rich, imaginative worlds, weaving fantasy and Nordic folklore into award-winning children's literature.
Irmelin Sandman Lilius is a pillar of Finland's Swedish-speaking literary community, crafting stories from her home in the archipelago town of Porvoo. Her writing career, spanning over half a century, is defined by a prolific and versatile output that includes poetry, novels, and translations, but she is most beloved for her children's books. Lilius possesses a unique talent for building intricate, atmospheric fantasy realms, most notably the series set in the fictional city of Tulavall, which draws deeply from Scandinavian myth and landscape. Her work is characterized by lyrical prose and a respect for the intelligence of young readers, often exploring themes of identity, history, and the magic latent in the everyday. While her name may not be globally ubiquitous, within Nordic literature she is a respected and decorated figure, her contributions earning her Finland's top cultural honors and a devoted readership across generations.

Irmelin was born in 1936, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
