A Chilean activist and anthropologist who redefined the role of First Lady, transforming it into a platform for feminist institutional critique before stepping away.
Irina Karamanos entered Chile's national consciousness not as a traditional political spouse, but as a forceful activist grappling with the symbolism of her position. An anthropologist and political scientist with a background in feminist and social movements, her relationship with President Gabriel Boric placed her in the spotlight of a country reevaluating its norms. Upon Boric's inauguration, she accepted the title of First Lady but immediately announced her intention to work towards its elimination, viewing the role as an archaic, non-elected appendage. As Sociocultural Coordinator of the Presidency, she focused on connecting grassroots organizations with the state, particularly those centered on gender and human rights. After nine months, she succeeded in formally dissolving the Office of the First Lady, a move that was both practical and powerfully symbolic. Karamanos's brief tenure was less about ceremony and more about a pointed, scholarly-driven effort to modernize Chile's political culture from within a structure she sought to dismantle.

Irina was born in 1989, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
