A Spanish intellectual in Paris who transformed a monthly newspaper into a global platform for critical thought on globalization and media power.
Ignacio Ramonet built a career at the intersection of journalism, academia, and activism from his adopted home in Paris. Initially a critic focused on cinema and semiotics, his trajectory shifted when he took the helm of Le Monde diplomatique in 1991. With a sharp editorial vision, he guided the publication to full independence from its parent newspaper, Le Monde, in 1996, freeing it to pursue a more radical, internationalist line. Under his stewardship, the 'Le Diplo' monthly became essential reading for its penetrating critiques of neoliberal globalization, media consolidation, and geopolitical power. Ramonet’s voice extended beyond print; he was a co-founder of the anti-globalization group ATTAC and a prolific author whose books, like 'The Tyranny of Communication,' dissected the modern information landscape.

Ignacio was born in 1943, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
