Malaysia's steady-handed third Prime Minister, a unifying force who championed national cohesion and fought corruption after a period of political turmoil.
Hussein Onn assumed Malaysia's leadership in the wake of tragedy, following the sudden death of his predecessor Tun Abdul Razak. The son of a founding figure of the ruling party, UMNO, Hussein was a lawyer by training with a deep sense of institutional integrity. His tenure, from 1976 to 1981, was defined by a calm, principled stewardship aimed at stabilizing the nation. He forcefully promoted the 'Rukunegara'—the national philosophy—to foster unity among Malaysia's diverse ethnic groups. While continuing his predecessor's economic development policies, he earned public respect for his direct, no-nonsense approach to governance, notably establishing the Anti-Corruption Agency. Plagued by heart problems, he stepped down after five years, passing the reins to his deputy, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, leaving behind a reputation for decency and a nation on firmer footing.

Hussein was born in 1922, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
