A durable and adventurous Japanese right-back who became a stalwart for his national team and a champion in Germany's top league.
Hiroki Sakai built a career on relentless reliability and athletic prowess on football's right flank. Emerging from the J.League with Kashiwa Reysol, his powerful runs and defensive solidity quickly made him a mainstay for the Japanese national team. A move to Europe took him to Hannover 96 in Germany, where he adapted and thrived in the Bundesliga's demanding environment. His peak club achievement came with Marseille in France's Ligue 1, where for five seasons he was a fixture, known for his marauding overlaps and consistent performances in both domestic and European competitions. After returning to Japan, his veteran leadership remained invaluable, earning him a surprise late-career move to captain the new A-League side Auckland FC. For Japan, he was a tournament constant, representing his country in multiple World Cups and Asian Cups with unwavering commitment.
