Biography

Henry McLeish's path to power was as unconventional as his time in it. Before entering politics, he was a professional footballer for East Fife, a background that gave him a grounded, everyman appeal. Elected as a Labour MP in 1987, he became a key architect of Scottish devolution. His ascent to First Minister in 2000 was a moment of promise, but his tenure was defined by a rapid, dramatic unravelling. The 'Officegate' scandal, involving subletting arrangements from his MP days, forced his resignation after just over a year. Yet, his impact outlasted the controversy. McLeish used his short time to champion free personal care for the elderly, a landmark social policy, and to firmly establish the new Scottish Parliament's voice. In later years, he reinvented himself as a thoughtful author and academic, often offering candid, critical analysis of Scottish and UK politics.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

Henry was born in 1948, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
