A young Polish volunteer whose life of service was cut short by violence, inspiring a movement of faith and compassion.
Helena Kmieć’s story is one of radiant faith meeting tragic fate. From a small town in Poland, she was a devout Catholic who studied chemistry but found her true calling in missionary work. Her smile and guitar became familiar sights in orphanages and community centers from Bolivia to Zambia, where she volunteered with the Salesian Missionary Volunteer Service. In 2017, at just 25, she traveled to a shelter for girls in Cochabamba, Bolivia. It was there, in a place meant for safety, that she was murdered during a robbery. Her death sent shockwaves through Poland and the Catholic world, transforming her from a dedicated volunteer into a symbol of selfless sacrifice. The Church has opened her cause for sainthood, naming her a Servant of God, and her legacy lives on through foundations and youth groups inspired by her profound, joyful commitment to helping others.
