The Dutch-born architect of the Australian rock sound, co-writing anthems like 'Friday on My Mind' and producing AC/DC's early records.
Harry Vanda’s story is the sound of Australian rock finding its voice. Arriving in Australia as a child immigrant from the Netherlands, he picked up a guitar and found his destiny in a Sydney migrant hostel, forming The Easybeats with fellow teen George Young. Together, they channeled the energy of the British Invasion into something uniquely Antipodean, culminating in the 1966 international smash 'Friday on My Mind,' a jangling, anxious ode to weekend release. When the band dissolved, Vanda and Young retreated to a studio, becoming the nation's preeminent production and songwriting duo. From their Albert Studios headquarters, they crafted hits for a generation of acts and, most significantly, guided the raw, explosive early recordings of George's younger brothers: Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC. Vanda's ear for a simple, powerful riff helped forge the backbone of hard rock.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Harry was born in 1946, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
