An Iowa-born folk troubadour whose rich, gravelly voice and poetically grounded songs paint intimate portraits of the American heartland and the human condition.
Greg Brown's music is rooted in the soil of the Midwest. Born in the Hacklebarney region of Iowa, he grew up surrounded by gospel, country, and folk music, played by family members. He didn't chase trends; instead, he spent years crisscrossing the country, playing in coffeehouses and developing a singular style—a deep, resonant baritone that sounds like well-worn leather, and songwriting that blends wry humor, spiritual yearning, and unflinching observation. His breakthrough came not from pop charts, but from loyal listeners and public radio, where his recordings found a devoted home. Albums like 'Further In' and 'The Poet Game' are classics of the modern folk genre, filled with stories of small towns, love, loss, and the quiet mysteries of everyday life. He also founded his own record label, Red House Records, to maintain artistic control. More than just a singer-songwriter, Brown is a regional chronicler and a storyteller’s storyteller, whose work feels less like performance and more like a conversation with a wise, slightly rumpled friend on a long porch night.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Greg was born in 1949, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
