Biography

Gilbert Murray's life was a bridge between the ancient and modern worlds. Born in Australia, he found his intellectual home at Oxford, where he would hold the prestigious Regius Chair of Greek for nearly three decades. While a formidable textual scholar, his true genius lay in translation. He rejected dusty, literal prose, instead crafting versions of Greek tragedies that were actable, poetic, and resonated with the concerns of Edwardian and inter-war Britain. His renditions of Euripides became the standard for stage productions, making the anguish of 'The Trojan Women' or the passion of 'The Bacchae' feel urgently contemporary. Beyond academia, he was a committed public intellectual, a passionate advocate for the League of Nations, and a friend to figures like George Bernard Shaw, who immortalized him as the character Cusins in 'Major Barbara.' Murray believed the Greek ideals of reason and humanity were a necessary antidote to the chaos of the 20th century.

The Gilded Age

1860–1882

Born during or after the Civil War, they built industrial America — the railroads, the steel mills, the first skyscrapers. An era of massive wealth, massive inequality, and the belief that the future belonged to whoever could build it fastest.

Gilbert was born in 1866, placing them squarely in The Gilded Age. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
