A former phys-ed teacher turned comic, he mined the absurdities of the classroom for a hit sitcom that defined Canadian comedy for a decade.
Gerry Dee finished third on 'Last Comic Standing,' a result that launched his television career. He had spent years as a physical education teacher in Toronto, a day job that supplied the material for his dry, observational stand-up routines about classroom frustrations and everyday life. That teaching experience became the foundation of 'Mr. D,' a CBC sitcom he created, wrote, and starred in for eight seasons. The show, loosely based on his own misadventures as a teacher, became a staple of Canadian television. Dee later took over as host of 'Family Feud Canada,' bringing his relatable, everyman charm to the long-running game show format. His path to comedy was indirect, but each step built on the last.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Gerry was born in 1968, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
