A humble priest who built a vast, enduring network of lay catechists that transformed religious education across Malta.
Born in Valletta in 1880, George Preca was a sickly child who grew into a priest with a radical vision. In 1907, he founded the Society of Christian Doctrine, a group of lay people he trained to teach the Catholic faith to others, an idea viewed with deep suspicion by the church establishment of his time. Preca, a Third Order Carmelite, insisted his members, known as M.U.S.E.U.M., live simply and focus on grassroots instruction. His persistence and gentle charisma eventually won over authorities, and his society became a cornerstone of Maltese Catholic life. Canonized in 2007, his legacy is less in theological innovation and more in the powerful, decentralized model of faith formation he created, earning him the title 'Malta’s second father in faith' from Pope John Paul II.

George was born in 1880, placing them squarely in The Gilded Age. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
