The trusted secretary who stood at the elbow of a pope-emeritus, becoming a visible symbol of a unique and complex papal transition.
Georg Gänswein's life became inextricably linked with that of Joseph Ratzinger. A trained canon lawyer and professor, his poised demeanor and loyalty saw him appointed personal secretary to Cardinal Ratzinger in 2003. He followed the cardinal into the papacy in 2005, becoming a constant, discreet presence beside Pope Benedict XVI. His role expanded to Prefect of the Papal Household, making him the formal manager of the Pope's schedule and residence. History thrust him into an unprecedented position in 2013 following Benedict's startling resignation. Gänswein became the living bridge between a reigning pope and a retired one, serving both Francis and Benedict in the Vatican gardens, a dual loyalty that placed him under intense and often critical scrutiny. In 2024, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to the Baltic states, moving a central figure of the Benedictine era to a new diplomatic chapter.
