Biography

Freddie Bartholomew represented a very specific Hollywood ideal: the impeccably mannered, heartbreakingly polite English boy. Born in London in 1924 and brought to America by an ambitious aunt, he was thrust into stardom with his poignant performance in 'David Copperfield' (1935). With his precise diction and soulful eyes, he was the antithesis of the rambunctious Mickey Rooney, becoming MGM's go-to actor for literary adaptations like 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' and 'Captains Courageous,' where he held his own against Spencer Tracy. His angelic screen presence, however, masked a turbulent off-screen life dominated by protracted and public lawsuits between his parents and his aunt for control of his substantial income. The legal fights, the physical strain of studio schedules, and the inevitable transition out of boyhood roles curtailed his film career by the 1940s. He later found a successful second act in advertising and television production, leaving behind a filmography that captures a fleeting moment of childhood grace.
