An Australian guitar virtuoso who revolutionized picking technique, bringing blistering, fluid speed to the world of jazz fusion.
Frank Gambale attacked the guitar with a scientist's precision and a virtuoso's flair. Moving from Sydney to Los Angeles in the 1980s, he quickly became a sought-after sideman and a formidable bandleader. His signature contribution was a complete overhaul of right-hand technique: he perfected and popularized sweep picking and economy picking, methods that allowed him to play arpeggios and scales at dizzying, violin-like speeds that seemed to defy the instrument's physical limits. This wasn't just flash; it was a new language for the guitar, one he taught through influential instructional books and videos. As a longtime member of the jazz-rock powerhouse Chick Corea Elektric Band, Gambale fused his fiery, articulate lines with complex harmonies, solidifying his status as a modern guitar icon whose technical innovations are now standard study for aspiring players worldwide.
