A 16th-century nobleman who traded a life of privilege for one of extreme poverty and prayer, co-founding an order dedicated to perpetual adoration.
Born Ascanio Caracciolo into Neapolitan aristocracy, Francis's early life pointed toward worldly comfort. A severe illness in his twenties sparked a conversion; he vowed to pursue religious life if he recovered. He sold his possessions, adopted the name Francis, and joined a confraternity serving the sick and imprisoned. A letter meant for a different 'Father Caracciolo' proposed a new religious order. Seeing divine providence, he partnered with John Augustine Adorno to found the Clerics Regular Minor. The 'Adorno Fathers' lived in radical poverty with a rule mandating constant prayer, including perpetual adoration of the Eucharist. Francis became known for ecstasies during prayer and footsore travels to establish the order before his early death.
