A 16th-century nobleman who traded a life of privilege for one of extreme poverty and prayer, co-founding an order dedicated to perpetual adoration.
Born Ascanio Caracciolo into Neapolitan aristocracy, Francis's early life pointed toward worldly comfort. A severe illness in his twenties sparked a profound conversion; he vowed to pursue a religious life if he recovered. True to his word, he sold his possessions, adopted the name Francis, and joined a confraternity serving the sick and imprisoned. His defining work began when a letter meant for a different 'Father Caracciolo' reached him, proposing a new religious order. Seeing divine providence, he partnered with John Augustine Adorno to found the Clerics Regular Minor. The 'Adorno Fathers' lived in radical poverty, with a unique rule mandating constant prayer, including perpetual adoration of the Eucharist. Francis became known for his ecstasies during prayer and his relentless, footsore travels to establish the order before his early death.
