An Ethiopian designer whose vibrant label transforms ancient hand-weaving traditions into bold, contemporary fashion for a global audience.
Fikirte Addis is a custodian of Ethiopian craft with a modernist's eye. Launching Yefikir Design in Addis Ababa, she built a brand that is fundamentally collaborative. Her process begins not with a sketchbook alone, but in the workshops of local artisans, particularly those mastering the traditional cotton fabric known as shemma. Addis's genius lies in reimagining these textiles—often in stark white and earthy tones—into sleek, tailored silhouettes, dramatic capes, and elegant dresses that feel both rooted and international. She has become a central figure in positioning Ethiopia as a source of high-end, ethically produced fashion, moving beyond stereotypical safari styles. By building her business at home, she provides sustainable income for weavers and challenges the global fashion system to look to African creativity not for inspiration alone, but for leadership in design and production.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Fikirte was born in 1981, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
