The steadfast Italian goalkeeper whose heroic 2010 World Cup performance became a national rallying point.
Federico Marchetti’s career is defined by one moment of immense pressure and the steadfast reliability that followed. For years a capable keeper in Serie A, his life changed in the 2010 World Cup. Thrust into starting duty after an injury to Gianluigi Buffon, Marchetti faced down some of the world’s best attackers. His defiant saves kept a struggling Italian team in contention, and though the defending champions exited early, Marchetti returned home a hero. He later became the bedrock for Lazio, his reflexes and command of the penalty area helping the club to Coppa Italia glory. More than just a shot-stopper, he was a leader, his calm presence providing a foundation for his teams throughout a long and respected career.
