A sample-wielding DJ who turned big beat into a global party soundtrack, making electronic music feel both anarchic and wildly accessible.
Norman Cook didn't invent electronic dance music, but as Fatboy Slim, he gave it a massive, grinning, stadium-sized personality. His journey began in the post-punk band The Housemartins, but his true calling was found in the DJ booth and the sampler. In the mid-90s, he unleashed a sound that was less about sleek techno and more about a chaotic, joyful collage. He mashed up rock riffs, funk basslines, soul cries, and movie quotes over pounding breakbeats, creating anthems like 'The Rockafeller Skank' and 'Praise You'. The latter's famously amateurish music video, which he directed under a pseudonym, became a cultural touchstone. His live shows, particularly his legendary beach-set gigs in his hometown of Brighton, were less concerts and more communal celebrations. Cook's genius was in making clever, sample-based music that felt instantly familiar and irresistibly fun, bridging the gap between club culture and the pop charts.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Fatboy was born in 1963, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
