A flame-throwing Dominican reliever whose powerful arm took him from the Arizona desert to the baseball fields of Japan.
Esmerling Vásquez brought pure, unadulterated heat to the mound. The right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republic signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and quickly climbed through the minors on the strength of a fastball that could touch the upper 90s. He made his MLB debut in 2009 as a reliever, often used in high-leverage situations where his strikeout ability was a weapon. While his command could be erratic, his raw talent was undeniable. After parts of three seasons with the Diamondbacks and a brief stint with the Minnesota Twins, Vásquez took his powerful arm to Japan, signing with the Saitama Seibu Lions of Nippon Professional Baseball. His journey reflects a common arc for talented international pitchers: harnessing electric stuff to reach the game's highest levels, and then extending a professional career across the global landscape of the sport.

Esmerling was born in 1983, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
