A tenacious salesman who, with his brother, turned a small family operation into the world's largest wine empire.
Ernest Gallo's story is a classic American drama, forged in hardship and built with relentless drive. After the tragic death of his parents in 1933, he and his younger brother Julio faced a stark choice: survive or fail. With a $5,900 loan and a pamphlet on winemaking from the local library, they launched E. & J. Gallo Winery in a Modesto shed. Ernest was the undisputed commercial engine—a fierce negotiator and marketing visionary who understood the American supermarket before anyone else in the industry. He built a distribution network so formidable it became the subject of antitrust battles, and he pioneered brand-focused advertising for wine, moving it from a commodity to a household name. While Julio mastered the vineyards and production, Ernest conquered the marketplace, creating a model of vertical integration and aggressive sales that forever changed how wine was made, sold, and consumed globally.

Ernest was born in 1909, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

He and his brother Julio started the winery just after the repeal of Prohibition, with Ernest handling sales and Julio production.
For decades, he refused to allow any family member's picture to appear on a Gallo wine label.
He was a major philanthropist, particularly in support of the arts and crime prevention programs.
The winery's early success was fueled in part by selling high-alcohol fortified wines like Thunderbird.
