Biography

Erik Poppe began his career with a camera in war zones, working as a photojournalist, and that need to witness defines his filmmaking. He transitioned to cinema with intimate dramas like 'Hawaii, Oslo', but it was his historical trilogy that cemented his reputation. With 'The King's Choice', he plunged into the tense hours of the 1940 Nazi invasion of Norway, framing the monarchy's resistance as a gripping thriller. Then, in a move that stunned the film world, he made 'Utøya: July 22', a single, relentless 72-minute take following a victim of the 2011 far-right terrorist attack. The film was an act of collective therapy, refusing exploitation for immersive empathy. Poppe's work argues that cinema must not look away from trauma, whether national or personal, as seen in the semi-autobiographical 'A Thousand Times Good Night' about a war photographer. He forces audiences to stand in the moment, making him one of Europe's most morally urgent directors.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

Erik was born in 1960, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
