As a six-year-old boy found clinging to an inner tube, he became the human focal point of a bitter political struggle between Cuba and the United States.
Elián González's name is synonymous with one of the most emotionally charged international incidents of the 2000s. In November 1999, the six-year-old Cuban boy was found off the Florida coast, the sole survivor of a failed escape attempt that claimed his mother's life. His rescue should have been a simple story of survival. Instead, it ignited a firestorm. Relatives in Miami fought to keep him in the United States, while his father in Cuba, backed by Fidel Castro's government, demanded his return. For seven months, Elián lived in a media hurricane, his image on posters at massive rallies in Havana and Miami. The standoff ended dramatically in April 2000 when armed federal agents raided his relatives' home in a pre-dawn operation, seizing the boy from a closet. The photograph of a terrified Elián facing an agent with a rifle became an enduring symbol of the clash. Returned to Cuba, he was raised by his father, embraced by the state, and later pursued a career as an industrial engineer, living a life deliberately out of the international spotlight that once defined him.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Elián was born in 1993, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
