He produced 5,000 pages of angelic dialogue in an unknown language, holding a court astrologer captive for seven years of dictated revelation.
Edward Kelley presented John Dee with a small black scrying stone in 1582. Dee, the foremost mathematician in England, recorded that Kelley immediately began describing visions of angels within it. For the next seven years, Kelley dictated the contents of these visions to Dee, resulting in the encrypted texts of 'Enochian' magic. The work comprised a complete angelic language with its own grammar, syntax, and an alphabet of 21 letters. Kelley and Dee traveled across the courts of Central Europe, funded by noble patrons like Count Rosenberg in Bohemia. In 1587, Kelley's controlling angels commanded the two men to share everything, including their wives—a directive that fractured the partnership. Emperor Rudolf II imprisoned Kelley in 1591 for failing to produce alchemical gold. He died in 1597 after a failed escape attempt from prison. The Enochian system he channeled became a cornerstone of modern Western ceremonial magic, studied by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later by Aleister Crowley.

Kelley reportedly had his ears cropped as punishment for forgery prior to meeting Dee.
He claimed to possess a red powder, the 'Philosopher's Stone,' capable of transmuting base metals into gold.
During scrying sessions, Kelley would often look away from the stone, describing angels that appeared behind him.
“I have spoken with the angel Uriel, and he has given me the sacred tongue.”
