A free-spirited Canadian polymath who moved seamlessly from beatnik jazz clubs to sci-fi cult classics.
Don Francks lived a life of bohemian artistry that seemed pulled from a Kerouac novel. He was a true renaissance man: a gifted jazz vocalist and saxophonist who performed with greats like Charles Mingus, and a character actor with a face made for the screen. His deep, resonant voice and imposing presence landed him roles that often leaned into the mystical or the rugged. To a generation, he was the voice of the wise samurai, Mugen, in the anime series 'Samurai Champloo,' and the father of actress Cree Summer. To another, he was the rebellious hippie in 'The Rainbow Boys' or the villainous gangster in 'McGyver.' Francks, who also used the name Iron Buffalo, embodied a counter-cultural spirit, embracing Indigenous causes and living on a houseboat. His career was less about fame and more about a relentless, authentic pursuit of creative expression across multiple disciplines.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Don was born in 1932, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
