An East Timorese priest who used his pulpit and courage to shelter his people and fuel the fight for independence.
Domingos Maubere, known as Padre Maubere, was a shepherd in the most literal and perilous sense during East Timor's long struggle for freedom. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1978, he returned to his homeland under Indonesian occupation and immediately aligned his ministry with the resistance. His parishes in places like Ossu and Letefoho became more than places of worship; they were hubs of clandestine coordination, shelters for guerrillas, and sources of spiritual sustenance for a traumatized population. As a fluent speaker of Tetum and Portuguese, he acted as a critical link between the clandestine front, the diplomatic efforts abroad, and the rural communities. After independence in 2002, he continued his pastoral work, embodying the Church's central role in East Timor's national identity. His life was a testament to faith in action, a quiet but unwavering defiance against oppression.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Domingos was born in 1952, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
