A controversial Croatian nationalist who helped resurrect a historic far-right party in the turbulent aftermath of Yugoslavia's collapse.
Dobroslav Paraga emerged as a polarizing force in the chaotic birth of an independent Croatia. As a young law student, his nationalist activism under Yugoslavia’s communist rule led to imprisonment, forging a reputation as a dissident. When multi-party politics erupted in 1990, he became the face of revived hardline nationalism, reclaiming the name of the historic Croatian Party of Rights (HSP), a group with roots in the 19th century. Paraga’s rhetoric, fiercely focused on Croatian sovereignty and historical grievances, appealed to those seeking a definitive break from the past. During the Homeland War, he was associated with the HSP’s paramilitary wing, further cementing his controversial status. His uncompromising stance eventually led to a split within his own party in 1993, prompting him to form the even more hardline Croatian Party of Rights 1861. Paraga’s political journey reflects the radical fringe of Croatia’s independence movement, a voice that championed maximalist ideals but ultimately remained on the margins of the country’s mainstream political evolution.

Dobroslav was born in 1960, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
