A Nigerian boxing champion who fought his way from poverty to the top of two weight divisions, becoming a symbol of national pride.
Dick Tiger's story is one of sheer will forged in hardship. Born Richard Ihetu in 1929 in what is now Nigeria, he took up boxing in the army and turned professional, battling in local rings before seeking his fortune in England and later the United States. He was not a flashy fighter, but a compact, powerful technician with immense courage and a punishing body attack. In 1962, he achieved his dream, outpointing Gene Fullmer to win the world middleweight title. He defended it fiercely, even after a controversial loss, reclaiming it in a famous 1965 bout with Joey Giardello. Never content, Tiger then moved up to win the light-heavyweight crown, defeating José Torres. His career coincided with the Biafran War in his homeland; he supported the Biafran cause, a stance that left him in exile and financially strained. He died of cancer at just 42, remembered as a fighter of immense integrity and a hero who carried Nigeria's flag onto the world's biggest sporting stages.

Dick was born in 1929, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
