A foundational pillar of German thrash metal, whose raw, aggressive sound helped define the genre's European wing in the 1980s.
Destruction released "Infernal Overkill" in 1987, a seminal album that helped define German thrash metal. Formed in 1982 in Weil am Rhein, the band featured guitarist Mike Sifringer's razor-sharp riffing and vocalist-bassist Schmier's snarling delivery. They became part of the so-called 'Big Four' of German thrash alongside Kreator, Sodom, and Tankard. Their sound offered a chaotic, punk-inflected counterpoint to American thrash. The band broke up in the mid-1990s after lineup shifts. A triumphant reunion in the late 1990s revived their career. They continued releasing vitriolic albums, including "Day of Reckoning" and "Diabolical," inspiring new generations of metalheads without softening their sound.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Destruction was born in 1966, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
