A dynamic outfielder whose speed and power made him a catalyst for the Tampa Bay Rays' playoff runs in the early 2010s.
Desmond Jennings arrived in the majors with the tools of a classic leadoff hitter: blistering speed, a keen eye, and a dash of pop. Drafted and developed by the Tampa Bay Rays, he became a fixture in their outfield during a period of sustained success. Jennings was a catalyst, using his legs to stretch singles, steal bases, and track down flies in the cavernous Tropicana Field. In 2011, his rookie season, he provided a jolt that helped propel the Rays to a dramatic playoff berth on the final day of the season. While injuries later tempered his trajectory, his peak years showcased a complete player who embodied the Rays' model of athletic, defensively-sound baseball. He was a homegrown talent who played a key role in one of baseball's most compelling underdog stories.
