An undersized center who carved out a decade-long NHL career through sheer hockey IQ and relentless work ethic after being overlooked in the draft.
Derek Ryan's path to the NHL was anything but conventional. Born in Spokane, Washington, he played four years of college hockey at the University of Alberta in Canada, a route rarely traveled by future NHLers. Undrafted, he spent his early twenties honing his craft in the Austrian and Swedish professional leagues, where he blossomed into a dominant playmaker. His breakthrough came in 2015 when, at age 28, he finally signed his first NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. Ryan wasn't a flashy star; he was a cerebral, dependable two-way center who excelled at face-offs and defensive details. His persistence made him a valuable bottom-six fixture for over 400 NHL games with Carolina, Calgary, and Edmonton, proving that a deep understanding of the game can trump pure physical pedigree.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Derek was born in 1986, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
