A blunt, intellectual powerhouse of British politics, he navigated economic crises and Cold War strategy with formidable eyebrows and wit.
Denis Healey was a Labour Party heavyweight who brought a rare combination of intellectual heft and pugnacious charisma to British government. A wartime beachmaster at the Anzio landings, he entered Parliament with a sharp, strategic mind honed by a Oxford first and a deep interest in international affairs. As Defence Secretary for six years, he oversaw the controversial withdrawal from East of Suez and modernized Britain's nuclear deterrent. His defining, and most turbulent, role was as Chancellor of the Exchequer during the economically disastrous 1970s, where he was forced to negotiate painful loans from the International Monetary Fund to stabilize the pound. Healey was a formidable debater, famous for his bushy eyebrows and devastating put-downs, once saying that being attacked by a rival was 'like being savaged by a dead sheep'. Though he narrowly lost the party leadership twice, his long career as an MP and elder statesman represented a brand of pragmatic, intellectually robust socialism that later seemed to fade from the political scene.
