A master of the flustered, morally compromised English gentleman, he became one of Britain's most decorated and beloved character actors.
With a face that could convey weary decency or seedy desperation, Denholm Elliott was the quintessential English character actor for decades. His career, spanning from post-war theatre to Hollywood blockbusters, was built on a foundation of impeccable technique and understated wit. After serving as a wireless operator and gunner in the RAF during World War II—and spending time as a prisoner of war—he returned to the stage before finding his niche in film. Elliott specialized in playing men who were slightly frayed at the edges: bureaucrats, cuckolds, kindly uncles, and faintly disreputable academics. His performance as the well-meaning but hapless museum curator Marcus Brody in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' introduced him to a global audience, but his finest work was in smaller British films. He won three BAFTA awards in the 1980s for supporting roles, and an Oscar nomination for his tender portrayal of Mr. Emerson in 'A Room with a View.' Elliott brought a profound humanity to every part, making the supporting role an art form.
