A powerful English striker whose career was tragically cut short by injury just as he was breaking into the national team.
Dean Ashton's story is one of English football's great 'what ifs'. Emerging from Crewe Alexandra's famed academy, the strapping centre-forward possessed a rare blend of physical power and technical grace, capable of scoring spectacular goals. His big-money move to West Ham United in 2006 seemed the launchpad for stardom, and he quickly became a fan favorite for his combative style and eye for the spectacular. A call-up to the England squad followed, but during a training session with the national team, a tackle from Shaun Wright-Phillips caused a severe ankle injury that he would never truly overcome. After a grueling three-year battle for fitness, Ashton retired at just 26, leaving the Premier League to wonder about the heights a fully-fit version of this complete forward might have reached.
