The founding rhythm guitarist of Dire Straits who walked away from rock superstardom to forge a quieter, introspective solo career on his own terms.
David Knopfler was present at the creation of one of rock's most distinctive sounds, providing the rhythmic bedrock alongside his brother Mark in the early days of Dire Straits. His work on the band's self-titled debut and 'Communiqué' helped establish their clean, narrative-driven style. Yet, as the band's success exploded with the impending release of 'Making Movies,' David made a conscious and decisive exit. The pressures of fame and a desire for artistic control led him to step off the rocket ship. His subsequent journey has been one of a steadfast solo artist, releasing a steady stream of albums that favor lyrical depth and melodic craft over commercial ambition, defining success as personal expression rather than chart position.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
David was born in 1952, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
