A New York rock chameleon who fronted the glam-punk pioneers the New York Dolls and later reinvented himself as the tuxedoed lounge lizard Buster Poindexter.
David Johansen was the snarling, androgynous heart of the New York Dolls, a band whose sloppy, swaggering rock and roll in the early 1970s became a foundational text for punk. With his theatrical stage presence and raw vocal delivery, he embodied downtown New York's gritty, glamorous decay. After the Dolls' initial flameout, Johansen refused to fade, embarking on a solo career that blended rock, blues, and R&B with his characteristic wit. In a stunning second act, he created the persona of Buster Poindexter, a debonair, martini-sipping showman whose 1987 version of 'Hot Hot Hot' became an unlikely party anthem. This transformation showcased his deep knowledge of American music and his refusal to be pigeonholed, cementing his status as a versatile and enduring performer.
