A British canoeing pioneer who mastered two distinct disciplines to become a world champion in both, a feat unmatched for decades.
David Florence approached the churning whitewater with the calm precision of a mathematician, which he was. The Edinburgh-born slalom canoeist merged a PhD in mathematics with an athlete's drive, creating a career of remarkable technical mastery. While many specialists focus on a single boat class, Florence achieved a rare double, conquering both the single (C1) and double (C2) canoe events. His 2013 World Championships performance was historic: he claimed gold in the individual C1 and, just days later, partnered with Richard Hounslow to win the C2 title, a dual victory not seen in sixty years. This intellectual paddler carried the flag for Great Britain at four consecutive Olympic Games, securing a silver medal in Beijing, and remained a dominant force on the World Cup circuit, respected for his flawless technique and strategic race planning.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
David was born in 1982, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
