A Liberal Democrat stalwart who championed electoral reform and international development from the Commons to the Lords.
David Chidgey entered politics not as a careerist but as a committed community advocate, winning a dramatic by-election for the Liberal Democrats in Eastleigh in 1994. For over a decade in the House of Commons, he carved out a reputation as a thoughtful, persistent voice on constitutional reform and foreign affairs, serving as his party's spokesperson on international development. His engineering background lent a practical, problem-solving edge to his parliamentary work. After leaving the Commons, his service continued in the House of Lords, where as Baron Chidgey he focused on African issues and governance, particularly in Sudan. His political journey, from local councilor to peer, reflected a deep, sustained belief in liberal democracy and the importance of Britain's engagement with the wider world, pursued with a characteristic lack of theatricality but considerable substance.

David was born in 1942, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
