A power forward who became the heart of the St. Louis Blues for a decade, defining their identity with relentless physical play and leadership.
David Backes carved out a career defined by grit and an unyielding work ethic. Hailing from Minnesota, he bypassed major junior hockey for the USHL and then Colorado College, developing a complete, hard-nosed game that made him a second-round pick in 2003. He didn't just arrive in the NHL; he imposed himself on it, becoming the St. Louis Blues' captain and the embodiment of their tough, defensive identity for nearly 800 games. His game was one of punishing checks, net-front battles, and timely scoring, earning him All-Star nods and deep playoff runs. While a Stanley Cup eluded him in St. Louis, his trade to Boston was a testament to his valued style, and he later returned to the Blues organization in a front-office role after retiring, closing a circle with the city he helped define.

David was born in 1984, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
