A fast bowler whose Test career was brief but fierce, remembered for his raw pace and resilience in a tough era for Australian cricket.
Dave Gilbert emerged from the Sydney club scene as a genuinely quick right-arm fast bowler, making his first-class debut for New South Wales in 1982. His peak coincided with a transitional period for the Australian team, and he seized his chance in the 1985-86 season. Standing tall and generating disconcerting bounce, Gilbert faced some of the world's best batsmen in his nine Tests, including a famous duel with the great Viv Richards. His international career was cut short by the resurgence of more established names and the emergence of a new generation. Undeterred, he became a vital workhorse in county cricket for Gloucestershire and later helped develop Tasmanian cricket. After retiring, Gilbert smoothly transitioned into cricket administration, serving as CEO of both Cricket New South Wales and the Sydney Cricket Ground, applying the same steady determination he showed on the field.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Dave was born in 1960, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
