Biography

Dariush Mehrjui did not just make movies; he forged a new cinematic language for Iran. His debut, 'The Cow' (1969), was a quiet earthquake—a bleak, neorealist fable banned by the Shah's government for its perceived criticism, yet it became the first modern Iranian film to gain international acclaim. Mehrjui's focus was the individual crushed by societal hypocrisy, whether in the crumbling marriage of 'The Cycle' or the intellectual despair of 'Hamoon.' He adapted Iranian literature with a sharp, modern eye, most famously turning J.D. Salinger's 'Franny and Zooey' into the Tehran-set 'The Pear Tree.' For decades, operating both before and after the 1979 Revolution, he navigated censorship to produce films of unflinching moral and psychological complexity, mentoring a generation of filmmakers and proving that Iranian stories could resonate with universal force.

The Silent Generation

1928–1945

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.

Dariush was born in 1939, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
